Can you make a feature film for less than $20,000 (200,000 SEK) all by yourself? Yes, you can—and we did!
It all started one night in 2015 when writer and director Emil Broo had trouble sleeping. He remembered a script he had written a year earlier for a feature film about a party that spiraled out of control—one he had eventually shelved. Then he thought to himself, "Wouldn't it be fun if that party turned into a zombie apocalypse?" In less than five minutes, he came up with the story that would eventually become
Watch Out for Zombies.
At first, the script was just written for fun, but over time, Emil and his crew realized that with today's cinema cameras and affordable gear like gimbals and sliders, it was possible to achieve highly cinematic shots on a low budget. This film proves that you can make a feature-length movie filled with VFX and a professional look, all by yourself, with little to no money—as long as you have the determination, passion, and a team that shares your vision. In the end, it all comes down to your idea, your story, and your characters.
The movie follows Daniel and Linnea, two depressed teenagers who are unsure about their futures. When they meet during a zombie apocalypse, they initially clash—Daniel is timid, while Linnea is hot-tempered and assertive. However, as they navigate their new reality, they realize they both had controlling and critical people in their lives before the outbreak—people who constantly dictated how they should act. As they come to understand each other, they eventually become friends and even find themselves thriving as zombie hunters. One of the film's main themes is self-discovery and staying true to yourself rather than blindly following societal norms. After all, zombies mindlessly follow the horde—without question or thought—and they’ll try to bite you so you become one of them.
Watch Out for Zombies blends horror and comedy, with the primary goal of being a fun and entertaining film. While we love zombies, blood splatter, and gore (which is always fun!), what truly matters is telling a compelling story with characters the audience cares about. This film delivers plenty of laughs, action, and horror, but at its core, it also has a lot of heart.
Starring Rasmus Dahlenlund and Felicia Nehlin in the lead roles, the film also features professional Swedish actors Thomas Hedengran, Mikael Almqvist, Yngve Dahlberg, Maria Forslin, and Lennart B. Sandelin.
